A root canal procedure becomes necessary when the nerve of the tooth is infected or the pulp is damaged. During a root canal treatment, the infected nerve and pulp are removed. The inside of the tooth gets cleaned and filled. In most cases today, a dentist will recommend a crown to strengthen and protect the tooth. (A tooth after a root canal treatment will become increasingly weaker and may become discolored.)
